Spread risks / social spacing definitions:
The virus is thought to spread mainly from “person-to-person”:
A) Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
- The WHO advises a distance of at least one metre. If someone infected with the coronavirus coughs within one metre of you, you could breathe in the virus through the droplets in the air.
- face to face for at least 15 minutes with someone who has a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19)
- been in the same closed space for at least 2 hours, as someone who has tested positive for the COVID-19 when that person was infectious.
- More information can be found here: australian.physio/coronavirus
Close contact can happen in many ways, but examples include:
- living in the same household or household-like setting (for example, a boarding school or hostel)
- direct contact with the body fluids or laboratory specimens of a confirmed case
- being in the same room or office for two hours or more
- face-to-face contact for more than 15 minutes in some other setting such as in a car or a lift or sitting next to them on public transport. (source: www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/victorian-public-coronavirus-disease-covid-19#what-are-the-symptoms-of-coronavirus)
- These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs if someone infected with the coronavirus coughs within one metre of you, you could breathe in the virus through the droplets in the air.
- Spread from contact with contaminated surfaces or objects that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
